Dvala

Dvala

Sweden's sleepiest app

Long stories in Swedish, read aloud by Farfar. Each one runs from 45 minutes to almost two hours. The idea is that you fall asleep before it ends.

Categories

Natur

Walks in the forest. Fog over Siljan. Farfar describes, slowly, what he sees.

Hantverk

Farfar stacks firewood. Bakes sourdough. Sharpens a knife. Unhurried.

Uppläsning

Train timetables. Municipal council minutes. Population statistics from 1962. Exactly as boring as it sounds.

One voice today. One more on the way.

The voices

Farfar

An AI voice built to sound like an older man who is never in a hurry. Slow and low.

Mommo

Coming soon

Grandmother in the Ostrobothnian dialect. A Finland-Swedish voice from Vaasa — lilting, soft and slow.

Why Dvala exists

I slept badly for years

A stressful life in Stockholm and a brain that wouldn't switch off at night. I tried everything: melatonin, sleep apps, podcasts, CBT, exercise. None of it stuck.

It took me a long time to work out why the podcasts never helped. It wasn't the voices — it was that there was something to follow. The moment a story has a point, I want to know how it ends. I'd lie there awake and listen to the finish.

What I needed was the opposite: someone talking calmly about nothing at all. No plot, no resolution, nothing to get caught on. Just a voice stacking firewood in the winter dark until I'm no longer there.

Nothing like that existed in Swedish. So I built it myself.

The voice is called Farfar — Swedish for grandfather. He is not a real person. He is an AI voice I built and refined over months, until he sounded like someone who genuinely has time. I say so plainly, because that part is the whole craft: getting a synthetic voice to stop being in a hurry.

I use the app myself several times a week. I have still never heard the end of a single story.
